UCI: No skinsuits for DH

pic from zimbio
Its official that skinsuits are banned for DH and 4X competition.
We still remember Tracy Moseley at Fort Bill and Australia, how her skinsuit made her a winner. And we actually agreed with Tracy, that most of the riders don't like wearing them, but that it is an advantage. This rule will lead into protesting, as stated in this article from transcendmagazine, majorly because this rule will cause higher cost for a national bicycle team.

UCI Bans Skinsuits for DH - Updated

AIGLE, Switzerland (transcendmagazine.com) -- UPDATE: This is no longer a rumour. The UCI has officially banned skinsuits for competition in DH and 4x. The official announcement will be made to all Trade Teams and the Media Monday.

No details have been released as to how this will be enforced, but we imagine it will be a similiar sort of ruling as they currently have in BMX competition. You must be able to pinch 3cm of material between your fingers without stretching on the forearm.

Editorial: Unfortunately the UCI has felt the need to over regulate the sport once again. This is a speed based sport. Riders race against the clock, they should be able to take every aero advantage they can get, no matter how silly some people feel it looks.

You can bet that national federations will be protesting this on the cost factor alone. Most federations do 1 uniform. It is worn by everyone from the Road and pursuit teams through XC and DH. Now they need to do at least a BMX jersey, as even a long sleeve XC jersey will not pass the test, and many countries require long sleeves for downhill competitions.

The Athertons

pic from bikemagic

Commencal Supreme DH

An interview with the Athertons, September 6, 2007 - cyclingnews

The Atherton family home is located on the side of a spectacular mountain valley and is shared by Dan, Gee, Rachel and their mother - and of course a constant stream of transient mountain bikers. Life for the family team of Commencal Animal began a lot further south, near Exeter in Devon, as Dan explained, "We lived in a small village, and I started riding BMX, then Gee and then Rachel began to come along and got into things. We began building tracks; there wasn't much else to do."

Indeed building tracks is still a passion for the trio - especially Dan who said, "We've got the dirt track, complete with start gates at home, as well as numerous downhill tracks here in the mountains; one's even ten minutes long. I'm really into that side of things, I love figuring it out and building stuff."

The family home would be the envy of any mountain bike team, with a huge workshop, a gym and store-rooms as well as the back "yard" dirt track, and this is where much of their race preparation takes place. "What we do on a daily basis depends some on the weather," said Gee. "In the morning it's usually straight into the gym for training. Then we recover some and do the admin type work, and then go riding."
Riding is a surprisingly mixed bag for the Athertons, and Dan is keyed into the training element. "Sometimes we spend a lot of time here at home on the track, practicing starts and dirt skills, largely for four cross; other times we take the pickup and go downhilling. If there is time between races, we go cross-country riding, and sometimes even on the road. We often take the moto-cross bikes out."

Training and preparation have always been something that they have been rumoured to take more seriously than others. "I think most riders train hard really," said Dan. "We do put a lot of time in. But we also work on three things - downhilling, four cross and freeriding - others often just focus on one or two. I think if we chose to focus on just one thing, then we would do a lot better."

"At the end of the day, we're paid to race downhill, but we enjoy the other stuff and it's also really important for the sponsors," added Gee.

The following morning the boys were due to head to Paris for a last minute call up to compete in a street race, something that is increasingly popular. Many of these races are organised by Red Bull, and are effectively a closed shop to any outsiders, including the media. This year Gee and Rachel are sponsored by the Austrian drinks manufacturer, and so are committed to a certain number of events. "Fortunately they have been great with understanding the need to focus on downhill racing, which is the most important thing overall," said Gee.

This year saw a new direction for the Athertons as they switched to Commencal as bike sponsor. "The deal is for three years, which is great. It cuts some freedom to be able to focus on long-term goals and development. We don't just have to think of publicity for the next few months," said Gee, who is very much at the head of commercial things.

"We're all very different characters, which helps things to work," said Gee. "Dan is very much into teaching and the technical side of things. I'm really interested and involved with the sponsorship element, and Rach is great with the media and words."

The differences appear on the bike, too. Dan, the eldest, was the not only the first to take up BMX, he was also the first to start downhill racing, and the other siblings followed suit, learning from his mistakes, and developing their own styles along the way.

"I started racing first, as a junior," said Dan. "At first we knew very little, especially about bike setup. I would set my bike up and ride it like a BMX, as rigid as possible, so we had a lot of broken bikes and bits to start with. I got a job in a bike shop, and they had a good mechanic who taught me about suspension, and that's when I started getting results, and the others, too."

Training and riding together on a daily basis is a huge bonus for them, and a major part to spurring them on and raising the pole. "There is definitely rivalry there, everywhere - even in the gym," said Gee. "I get really fired up if I can't do something Dan can. Last week he pulled off a move on a trail. I tried for ages and just could not do it, it really frustrated me - but that's what pushes us on."

And there's no doubt that the effect of riding daily with her brothers has made a huge impact on Rachel, the youngest of the three. "It's great; riding with the boys is the best thing I could do. They constantly push me, and seeing them do things gives me the confidence to try things for myself."

IBIS TRANNY

What is tranny bike, anyway? or Ibis tranny, in this case?
according to Ibis or probike
It’s a carbon fiber hardtail.
It’s a geared bike.
It’s a single speed.
It’s a travel bike.
It’s all of the above.

It’s the Ibis Tranny.

Lopes' tranny

The The Ibis Tranny is a strong and lightweight monocoque carbon fiber hardtail. And a lightweight, laterally stiff, vertically compliant one at that. The Tranny goes far beyond being just a hardtail, resulting in some unique features. The features are a result of the removable, adjustable-length, chainstay. This means you can transform it from a single speed to a geared bike to a travel bike in a matter of minutes.

At the section behind the bottom bracket. There's some hidden equipment down there we call the "Slot Machine". It's not really a machine, but it does have a slot that makes it adjustable. That allows us to lengthen the chainstays, so we can make this thing into a bona fide single speed. It's lighter than an eccentric bottom bracket, and cleaner than a chain tensioner. Look at our little animation of the Slot Machine in action. One bolt cinches the whole thing up.
As an added bonus, that same box of magic along with the curious little bolt up along the wishbone allows you to take the whole rear end off of the bike. Two bolts and it's in two pieces. Why would you want to do that? Easier to travel with my friends, and also possible to fly with this thing in a travel case and not pay the exorbitant fees the airlines like to charge us to carry our bikes.

MEMAHAMI TERMINOLOGI BAN

dari mbaction
Dari kiri, searah jarum jam

ARAH ROTASI / ROTATION DIRECTION

NEGARA ASAL / COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
Pakai kaca pembesar. Biasanya tulisannya kecil.

TAMBALAN PANAS / HOT PATCH

ANGKA CETAKAN / MOLD NUMBERS

KISARAN TEKANAN UDARA / AIR PRESSURE RANGE

UKURAN BAN / TIRE SIZE (milimeter)

UKURAN BAN /TIRE SIZE (inci)

Yeti Downhill and Slopestyle Prototypes

Information and photos courtesy of Yeti Cycles
from mbaction
by Ryan Cleek

Yeti has been working on designs that utilize the 303 technology. And, these prototypes are focused entirely on the gravity market and will fill-out their product line in downhill and slopestyle segments.

The 303 technology is unique because the wheel path and shock rate can be controlled independently. The new designs use a single rail to either control the wheel path or shock rate. This coupled with the pivot layout allows Yeti to create bikes that are lighter, less complicated, and still have many of the attributes of the 303.

All rail bikes will start with 303. If there is an R in the name, they are using the rail primarily to control the rate of the shock (horizontal rail). If there is no R, the rail is used to control the wheel path (vertical rail). All of these bikes are still prototypes and Yeti will spend the race season testing and optimizing the design.

Proto 303R-SS
Designed for aggressive trail riding, slopestyle, and gravity bent all-mountain. The rate on this bike has been designed to be stiffer so it holds the rider up in g-outs, berms, and really flowing terrain. The stiffer overall rate also makes it more difficult to bottom-out.

Travel: 5.4”
Projected weight: 7.5 lbs w/Fox DHX Air shock
Head angle: 68 degrees w/Fox 32 Float (140mm) fork, 66.3 degrees w/ Fox 36 Float (160mm)
Chainstay: 16.5 “
Bottom bracket height: 13”
Price: N/A

Proto 303R-DH
A less expensive DH bike that uses a single pivot coupled with their 303 technology. By utilizing a horizontal linear rail Yeti was able to create a rate similar to the 303 DH. The single pivot design has a different wheel path than the 303 DH, but they were able to simplify the design and lighten up the frame significantly.

Travel: 8.5”
Projected weight: 10lbs
Head angle: 64.5 to 65.4 degrees
Chainstay: 17.25”
Projected price: $2499

Set up the giant NRS shock

How to set up the giant NRS shock for uphill climbs and decent downhill.

1. Set the spring pressure so that the shock will not sag on level ground
2. Add 1- to 25 psi to compensate for rearward weight transfer of the upgrade

This bike is for trail riding only. Don’t use this bike to do downhill especially if you have a big and heavy posture. Better ride the dual purpose bike like Giant Reign.
